'Rhizome: Nomade, Trans, Cosmopolite'
가슴 시리게 깊은 저 청명한 가을하늘과 그 하늘 아래 창원 곳곳의 흐드러진 국화 작품을 탐닉하려 전국에서 나들이 인파가 모여든다. 이들의 흥을 돋우는 다양한 행사가 창원국화축제의 틀 속에서 이어진다. 이 국화 꽃향기 가득한 축제 분위기 속에는 창원이 한국 근현대사의 중심에 있는 민주성지라는 사실이 숨어 있다. 그러나 2021년 제 3회 창원국제민주영화제는 42년 전 이토록 아름다운 계절에 일어났던 민주화를 향한 외침을 다시 당당하게 울린다.
씨네아트 리좀은 결국 휴관 문제를 풀지 못했다. 그러나 1년 동안 준비해온 제3회 창원국제민주영화제를 개최하기 위해 임시로 재개관했다. 그 영향력을 국화 향기에 실어 전국으로, 그리고 세계로 날려 보낼 것이다.
제 3회 창원국제민주영화제는 특별히 아프리카에서 문화예술 선도국으로 평가받는 세네갈을 초빙국으로 선정했다. 이 나라의 영화 두 편이 상영되고 미술작품이 전시된다. 주한 세네갈 대사관과의 접촉 과정에서 그들이 가진 문화예술에 대한 열망과 한국에 대한 애정을 읽었다.
이번 창원국제민주영화제에 상영될 세네갈과 라틴아메리카의 영화는 통상처럼 기존의 필름마켓과 영화제가 아니라 국제적인 인적 네트워크를 통해 확보했다. 특히 개막작 ‘3세대’와 ‘우추라하이의 기억’은 그 가치가 특별하다. 창원 리좀국제레지던스 프로그램에 참가했던 ‘3세대’의 산티 제가라 감독에게 고마움을 표한다. 아르헨티나 작품들은 역시 창원 리좀국제레지던스를 거친 부에노스아이레스 국립예술대학 카르코바 박물관 관장과 리마 교황청 가톨릭대학교 문화센터의 도움을 받았다.
전시 행사는 특히 전 주 세네갈 한국대사 최동환 대사의 낮밤 구별 없는 노력과 파리를 거점으로 국제적으로 활동하는 심은록 미술평론가, 이번에 전시할 이미지 영상화 작업을 도맡아 했다. 샌프란시스코에서 활약하는 에스터 김 아트플러스갤러리 관장의 노력 없이는 불가능했을 것이다. 이번 전시는 세계의 미술을 한국에 소개함과 동시에 향후 한국미술을 세계에 알리는 토대의 구축이라는 의미를 갖는다. 게다가 미술과 영화의 NFT(대체 불가능한 토큰)화를 대비하는 이 그룹은 그 일환으로 창원에서 처음으로 작품의 영상 전시를 시도한다. 따라서 이번 전시는 영화제에 맞춘 미술전시이며 우리는 융합하는 것을 즐겨한다.
그리고 이러한 국제적인 인적 네트워크의 기획력과 이 프로젝트의 실현이 갖는 중요성을 한눈에 알아차린 창원문화재단 임웅균 대표이사의 안목을 높이 평가하며 어려움 속에서도 기꺼이 도움을 주신 것에 대해 감사드린다. 이번 전시는 성산아트홀을 사랑하는 예술 애호가들에게도 세계 예술의 일부를 향유할 수 있는 귀한 기회가 되길 빈다.
이번 영화제는 많은 지지층 덕분에 한껏 든든해졌다. 제1회 리좀영화교실 수료자들과 갓 태어난 씨네클럽리좀 회원들의 직접적이고 헌신적인 도움은 많은 위로를 주었다. 그리고 씨네아트 리좀과 창원국제민주영화제 조직위원회의 경제적 어려움을 이해하고 50편의 영화 수급에 편의를 제공한 배급사들에게 진심으로 감사드린다. 끝으로 무엇보다 예측하기 힘든 준비 과정과 리좀적인 일처리 방식 그리고 엄청난 작업량에도 불구하고 사정을 잘 이해하고 또 열심히 따라준 리좀의 직원들이 있었기에 이 모든 게 가능했음을 밝히며 진심으로 고마운 마음을 전하고자 한다.
이로써 창원국제민주영화제는 제3회를 거치면서 그 영속을 위한 기본 틀이 튼튼하게 구축되었음을 확신한다.
2021년 제3회 창원국제민주영화제는 총 52편의 영화와 함께 전시, 강연, 감독과의 대화 등 다양한 행사를 동반한다. 그리고 올해는 초빙국으로 선정된 아프리카 세네갈의 영화와 미술작품 전시 및 강연, 특히 한국에서 처음 맞이할 페루 영화 상영과 아르헨티나 작품 전시, 창원 프랑스문화원 ‘메종 드 프랑스’의 개원 행사 영상전시, 씨네클럽리좀 멤버들의 큐레이팅 및 영화 해설, 금년 부산국제단편영화제 수상작 순회전 등이 마련된다. 이와 더불어 부마민주항쟁기념사업회와 공동주최로 프랑스의 거장 아녜스 바르다 감독 회고전도 준비하였다.
이들 모든 영화는 영화제 기간 동안 각각 1회씩만 상영된다.

People from all over the country gather under the sky of Changwon to enjoy the deep blue autumn sky and the chrysanthemum artworks scattered all over the city. Various events will boost their excitement in within the framework of the Changwon Chrysanthemum Festival. In this festive atmosphere filled with the fragrance of chrysanthemums, there is the hidden fact that Changwon is a sacred place for democracy in the center of Korean modern and contemporary history. However, the 3rd Changwon International Democracy Film Festival(CIDFF) in 2021 proudly echoes the cry for democratization that took place during such a beautiful season, 42 years ago.
In the end, Cineart Rhizome could not avoid its closure. However, it was temporarily reopened to host the 3rd CIDFF, which had been prepared for a year. It will send its influence to the whole country and the world filled with the fragrance of chrysanthemums.
The 3rd CIDFF specially selected Senegal as a guest country, which is assessed as a leading country in culture and art in Africa. Two films will be screened and artworks from Senegal will be displayed. In the process of contacting the Senegalese embassy in Korea, we learned about their passion for culture and art and their love for Korea.
The two opening movies '3rd Generation' and 'Memories of Uchuracai' are of special value. I would like to express my gratitude to director Santi Zegarra of ‘3rd Generation’ who participated in the Changwon Rhizome International Residence Program. Argentinian artworks were also helped by the Director of the Karkova Museum at the Buenos Aires National University of Arts and the Cultural Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Lima, who also went through Changwon Rhizome International Residence.
In particular, the exhibition event would not have been possible without the day and night efforts of Choi Dong-hwan, former Korean Ambassador in Senegal, the video work of the images to be displayed effected by Sim Eun-log, an art critic who is internationally active in Paris, and the dedication of Esther Kim who operates Art Plus Gallery in San Francisco. This exhibition introduces arts of the world to Korea, and at the same time, has the meaning of establishing a base for introducing Korean art to the world in the future. Moreover, preparing for making art and film NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), the group makes a first attempt at a video exhibition of artworks in Changwon as part of that. Therefore, this exhibition is part of an attempt to converge genres as an art exhibition linked to the film festival.
In addition, I highly appreciate the insight of Mr. Im Woong-gyun, CEO of the Changwon Cultural Foundation, who recognized at a glance the planning ability of such an international human network and being aware of the importance of this project, I would like to thank him for his willingness to help us despite difficulties.
I hope this exhibition will be a precious opportunity for art in general and Seongsan Art Hall lovers to enjoy part of the world's artwork.
This festival has been reliable and strong thanks to a large number of supporters. The direct and dedicated help of the 1st Rhizome Film Class graduates and new Ciné Club Rhizome’s members gave me a lot of comfort. I sincerely thank the film distributors who understood the economic difficulties of Cineart Rhizome and the organizing committee of the CIDFF for providing the supply of 50 films. Lastly, above all else, I would like to say that all of this was possible thanks to the team of Rhizome who understood the situation well and followed diligently despite the unpredictable preparation process, the rhizomatic way of working, and the enormous amount of work. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to them.
As a result, I am convinced that the basic framework for perpetuation of the CIDFF has been firmly established through the 3rd edition.
The 3rd CIDFF held in 2021 is accompanied by various events such as exhibition, lecture, and conversation with the director along with a total of 52 films. And this year, exhibitions and lectures of films and art works from Senegal, Africa, which is selected as the guest country, and screenings of Peruvian films which for the first time in Korea, as well as exhibitions of Argentinian art works, will be prepared. Also, the public will be able to enjoy many more activities such as video exhibition of the opening event of the French Cultural Center 'Maison de France' in Changwon, Ciné Club Rhizome members’ curating and movie commentary, and a tour of the winning films of this year's Busan International Short Film Festival. In addition, a retrospective exhibition of French master director Agnes Varda was prepared jointly with the Commemorative Association for Buma Democratic Uprising.
Each of all these films are screened only once during the festival period.
